DHARAMSHALA, July 16: In a landmark moment for Tibetan representation in international football, Swiss midfielder Cheveyo Tsawa, a rising talent of Tibetan heritage, has signed for Belgian champions Club Brugge, marking one of the most significant milestones achieved by a footballer with Tibetan roots on the European stage.
The 19-year-old from FC Zürich has signed a four-year contract that will keep him at the 20-time Belgian champions until 2030. While neither Club Brugge nor FC Zürich disclosed the financial details of the transfer, Belgian media have reported the deal to be worth just over €6 million.
Tsawa began his football journey in the youth academies of FC St. Gallen 1879, FC Steinach, and FC Zürich, steadily progressing through the ranks to earn a place in Zürich’s senior squad. During the 2025–26 season, Tsawa made 36 first-team appearances, scoring two goals and registering two assists. His consistent performances also earned him recognition at the international level, representing Switzerland across multiple youth age groups, from the Under-16s to the Under-21s.
Widely regarded as one of Belgium’s most decorated football clubs, Club Brugge is a perennial contender for the domestic title and regular participant in the UEFA Champions League. The club has built a strong reputation for developing emerging talent and providing young players with a pathway to Europe’s elite competitions.
Tsawa’s arrival places him in one of the continent’s most competitive football environments, where he will have the opportunity to refine his game at the highest level. Known for his composure on the ball, tactical awareness, and versatility in midfield, Tsawa can operate in both defensive and central midfield roles. His performances for FC Zürich and Switzerland’s youth national teams have earned praise for their maturity, technical precision, and ability to dictate the tempo of matches despite his young age.
Born and raised in Switzerland, Cheveyo is the son of Dorjee Tsawa, a former professional footballer for FC St. Gallen of Tibetan origin. His rise through European football has become a source of pride across Tibetan communities, where opportunities for athletes to reach the highest levels of professional football have historically been limited.
For many Tibetans in exile, Tsawa’s achievement represents more than an individual success. It serves as a reminder that members of the Tibetan diaspora continue to excel on the global stage in diverse fields while maintaining a connection to their cultural heritage.
The move has been widely celebrated on social media, with congratulatory messages pouring in from Tibetans, football supporters, and members of the wider diaspora. Many have described the transfer as a historic moment, expressing hope that Tsawa’s journey will inspire a new generation of young Tibetan athletes to pursue professional careers in football.
