Nepal Bans July 6 Celebrations of Dalai Lama’s Birthday

In an alarming crackdown on the rights of Tibetans living in Nepal, the Nepalese government yesterday banned all events celebrating the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet, who turns sixty-eight on Sunday.

Nepal Bans Tibetan Events

The Nepalese authorities have banned events celebrating the birthday of the Dalai Lama in Kathmandu planned for this coming Sunday. The ban was announced by phone by the Chief of Police at about 9pm on Friday 4th July to the Representative of the Dalai Lama here in Kathmandu.

Nepal Ban “Issued by Home Ministry”

The ban by the Nepalese authorities on celebrations of the Dalai Lama's birthday on July 6th was issued on orders from the Nepalese Home Ministry, according to a Tibetan official in Kathmandu, who added that the wide-reaching order had been confirmed on Saturday morning.
