DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 20: Tibetan singer Lobsang, known for his politically charged lyrics and deep commitment to Tibetan cultural expression, passed away on Tuesday in a hospital in Chengdu, China, due to liver disease. He was 39 years old, reported Radio Free Asia.

A native of Kyungchu County in the Amdo region, Lobsang released eight music albums throughout his career, earning widespread admiration among Tibetans for his poignant songs that celebrated Tibetan culture and resilience. However, his artistic expression made him a target of Chinese authorities, who frequently detained and interrogated him over suspicions of political activities.

Lobsang faced repeated harassment and restrictions, including being barred from traveling to Lhasa in recent years. One of his most notable songs, “Nyi Da Gar Sum” (Sun, Moon, and Camp), referenced the Dalai Lama, drawing the attention of Chinese authorities. Other popular works, such as “The Happiness and Suffering of the Snow Land,” “World Peace,” “The Future Path of Snow Children,” “Kyabgon” (Protector), and “The Fate of Tibetans,” further solidified his status as a significant cultural figure among Tibetans.

News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and solidarity among Tibetans both inside Tibet and in exile. Shel Gendun Tsering, a former political prisoner now residing in Australia, told RFA that despite Lobsang’s immense contributions to Tibetan music, he was subjected to constant surveillance and interrogation by Chinese authorities.

Lobsang’s repeated arrests and detentions exemplify Beijing’s broader crackdown on Tibetan intellectuals and cultural expression. Human Rights Watch, in its World Report 2025, documented the arbitrary arrests of Tibetans and severe restrictions on freedom of expression, reflecting China’s tightening grip over Tibetan voices and cultural identity.

  1. A great loss for Tibet and Tibetan cultural heritage: such a young talented Tibetan singer who had bright future; but whose life was cut short by an evil regime who did not like his beautiful lyrics.

My heartfelt condolence and prayers for his family and may he soon take rebirth in a free world to continue to sing his songs.
