Dharamshala, Jan. 29: The Tibetan government in exile yesterday mourned the passing away on January 27 of former Indian President R. Venkataraman in New Delhi at Army Hospital. He was 98.

As the mark of respect, the administration held a hour-long prayer service this afternoon, after which all the offices and departments remained closed, the exile Tibetan government’s official website said.

In his brief address, Kalon Tripa Prof Samdhong Rinpoche described Mr Venkataraman as a freedom fighter and lauded his steadfastness in his service to the nation.

The Indian government on Tuesday declared a seven-day state mourning.
