DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 14: The foremost Buddhist leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has extended his congratulations to the newly elected President of Finland in a letter penned on Wednesday. Former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb has won Finland’s presidential election held on Sunday.
The Buddhist leader’s letter acknowledged the warmth and receptivity he has experienced during his visits to the country, noting the genuine interest shown by Finnish people from diverse backgrounds. “It has been an honour for me to have been able to visit your beautiful country several times over the years. I deeply appreciate that on those occasions Finnish people from all walks of life have shown keen interest in what I had to say about developing love and compassion, cultivating an appreciation of the oneness of humanity and acknowledging the importance of inter-religious harmony,” the octogenarian leader wrote.
His message voiced deep concern for the plight of individuals enduring the ravages of violent conflicts around the globe. “It is very sad that in various parts of the world today many people are suffering in violent conflicts. As an avowed campaigner for a world free from violence and weapons, it has been my earnest hope that the international community would make concerted efforts to resolve conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy and so contribute to the creation of a more peaceful and compassionate world,” expressed the Nobel laureate, known for his unwavering commitment to peace and compassion.
In his concluding remark, the Dalai Lama extended his sincere wishes for the future of Finland under Stubb’s leadership, “May I wish you every success in meeting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of Finland.”
Stubb secured 51.6% of the vote, while his Green Party rival, Pekka Haavisto, the former foreign minister, attained 48.4%. This victory marked a significant moment for Stubb and the National Coalition Party, to which he belongs. At a press conference held late on Sunday following his win, he expressed profound gratitude, describing his election victory as “the greatest honor of my life.”
As the President-Elect, Alexander Stubb is set to officially assume office on 1 March, succeeding Sauli Niinistö. The role of the Finnish head of state is pivotal, with direct responsibility of foreign and security policy, along with serving as the commander-in-chief of the country’s armed forces.
