The biggest Buddhist stupa, or shrine, in the West is being constructed in Victoria. Called the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion, at 50m high and with a 50sqm base, the shrine in Bendigo will tie Australia into a global Buddhist connection that stretches back 13 centuries.

Thousands of supporters and devotees of the Dalai Lama gave a spirited reception to the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet on Sunday, who urged the sold-out audience at the FleetCenter to seek peaceful means of resolving conflict.

Pairs of shoes lined the entryway to the Chamtse Ling temple Sunday as Buddhist worshippers gathered for the first teaching in the shrine room celebrating the public opening of the center.

Thriving tourism is expected to bring $120 million to Tibet this year.

In the lush valley flanked by Tibet's rugged mountains, it's harvest time. A combine rented from a local monastery brings some efficiency to a backbreaking chore. Still, farmer Laba Zhouma makes sure every single ear of grain left behind is picked up.
