DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 2: The release of Tibetan language rights activist Tashi Wangchuk last week after completing five-year sentence was followed by reports of Chinese authorities imposing intense scrutiny, including deprivation of political rights, raising questions over the condition of his release.

The European Union on Friday released a statement that called upon China to safeguard the Tibetan activist’s freedom and his rights. “The European Union calls upon the Chinese authorities to ensure that Mr Wangchuk’s release is unconditional and that he is able to enjoy his fundamental freedoms, including freedom of movement and residence.

“The EU also urges the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of mistreatment, torture and abuses on Mr Wangchuk while in detention,” the statement read.

The EU defended Wangchuk’s right to protect his language constitutionally, and highlighted the persecution of activists and grass roots leaders in Tibet, “Citizens of Tibetan descent in China face restrictions on freedom of religion or belief, and freedom of education in a minority language. There are also numerous related cases of detention, disappearances and deaths in detention.”

“The EU calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all those currently imprisoned in connection with the exercise of their rights and fundamental freedoms. Those in detention have a right to a fair trial and due process, and to decent treatment, free from torture and ill treatment while in prison,” the statement said while adding that the European Union will continue to engage with China on human rights issues.

Tashi was arrested on 27 January 2016 after a New York Times news article and a video report came out, documenting Tashi’s mission to file a formal complaint against Chinese officials for failing to support Tibetans’ right to Tibetan language education.

He was awarded the International Tibet Network’s ‘Tenzin Delek Rinpoche Medal of Courage’ in July 2017; an annual award given to Tibetan human rights defenders who show deep commitment to enhancing the freedom and rights of the Tibetan people at great personal risk.
