Minneapolis, March 12 – Regional Tibetan Women’s Association of Minnesota commemorated 50 years since Tibetan women rose up against China on March 12, 1959, two days after the popular March 10 uprising. Leaflets were distributed to pedestrians and motorists at the Conner of Peavey Plaza street around 5PM when people went home from work.
Peavey Plaza is one of the busiest intersections in downtown Minneapolis. Supporters honked in a show of support for Tibet support from inside their vehicles.
RTWA Secretary Tenzin Lhamo gave an introduction about the day being observed worldwide as the Tibetan women’s uprising day. The Tibetan national anthem was sung and a minute’s silence was observed to pay tribute to the Tibetans who had laid down their lives for the nation. Sherab Tsomo of RTWA read out the statement of the Tibetan Women’s association for the occasion.
Dhondup Dorjee, Vice president of the Tibetan Youth Congress, presided over as the chief guest on the occasion. Addressing gathering about the significance of the women’s uprising day, Dhondup said it is important for the younger generations of Tibetan women to play active part in the Tibetan struggle.
Sonam Arti, President of RTWA, Minnesota, declared the year 2009-2010 as the International Year of Tibetan Women as marked by TWA centrex to honor the brave sisters who scarified their lives for the Tibetan cause.
