DHARAMSHALA, April 8: Dr. Christian Schwarz-Schilling, a longtime advocate for Sino-Tibet dialogue and a steadfast supporter of the Tibetan cause, reportedly passed away on Monday at the age of 95.
A prominent figure in German and international politics, Dr. Schwarz-Schilling served as a member of the German Bundestag for over two decades and held the post of Federal Minister for Post and Telecommunications. He later took on significant international responsibilities, including serving as the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he played a key role in post-conflict mediation and governance.
He was also the founder of the Schwarz-Schilling Foundation and remained actively engaged in initiatives promoting dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. Over the years, he maintained close engagement with the exile Tibetan leadership and consistently advocated for a negotiated settlement to the Sino-Tibet issue.
President Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), on behalf of the Tibetan government-in-exile, expressed his heartfelt condolences in a letter addressed to the late leader’s bereaved daughters. The CTA President recalled his most recent meeting with Dr. Schwarz-Schilling in Frankfurt on June 26, 2025, which he attended alongside Representative Thinley Chukki of the Tibet Bureau in Geneva.
“Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Christian Schwarz-Schilling, a steadfast friend and champion of Tibet. On behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones,” President Tsering wrote.
He further paid tribute to the late German statesman’s enduring commitment, stating that beyond his distinguished political career, Dr. Schwarz-Schilling was “a true and steadfast friend of Tibet” who consistently advocated for Sino-Tibet dialogue. Reflecting on their long association, he described him as a man of integrity and unwavering dedication to the peaceful resolution of conflict.
The CTA President also highlighted Dr. Schwarz-Schilling’s longstanding engagement with the Cabinet and Tibetan leadership through various international forums and roundtable discussions. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the International Campaign for Tibet’s Light of Truth Award in 2013 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Expressing personal gratitude, the CTA President noted that he was thankful for the opportunity to meet Dr. Schwarz-Schilling one final time last year and to convey his appreciation for his continued support.
“We mourn the loss of a cherished friend, a loyal advocate, and a wonderful human being. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched. Please know that our prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. May he attain a swift rebirth,” the condolence message concluded.
