DHARAMSHALA, April 6: The 31st Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup (GCMGC), the premier sporting event of the Tibetan exile community, kicked off on Sunday at the Dhondenling Tibetan settlement in Kollegal, Karnataka, India and will run from April 5 to April 16.

This year’s 12-day tournament brings together 12 teams representing Tibetan settlements across India. Among the contenders are defending champions DYSA Mundgod and last year’s runners-up Tashi Dekyi Lhartso (TDL) Bylakuppe.

The host team, Dhondenling FC Kollegal, is joined by Phuntsokling United Sports Club, Hunsur Rabgyaling FC, Choepheling FC, Dhondupling FC, Dekyiling Sports Club, Gulladhalla Youth Association, and Samyelling FC. Adding fresh energy to this year’s competition are two new entrants, Lhasa FC and Shawn FC.

Speaking to Phayul, Jangchup Gyaltsen, Director of the Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA), said that the tournament’s organizers have so far proceeded smoothly without major challenges. However, he noted that Kollegal’s relatively remote location and the long travel distances have contributed to a reduced number of participating teams this year. While the tournament typically features 16 or more teams, only 12 teams are competing in this edition.

He also highlighted a notable development in officiating, with referees invited from Northeast India for the first time. Traditionally, referees are sourced through the All India Football Federation. He explained that the decision was influenced by the high standard of officiating observed during the Independence Cup held in Kalimpong.

Expressing optimism, he said the tournament is expected to conclude successfully without major issues, emphasising its enduring role in fostering unity, community spirit, and athletic excellence among Tibetans in exile.

The opening match saw host side Dhondenling FC secure a 3–1 victory over Dekyiling Sports Club.

Founded in 1980, with its inaugural tournament held in 1981, the Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup was established to honor Diki Tsering, the mother of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Over the decades, the tournament has evolved into a vital platform celebrating resilience, unity, and sporting excellence within the Tibetan diaspora.
