DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 9: Tibetan heritage footballer Cheveyo Tsawa has made history by becoming the first player of Tibetan heritage to represent a club in the UEFA Champions League, marking a significant milestone for Tibetan representation on one of football’s biggest stages.Â
Tsawa made his Champions League debut for Belgian side Club Brugge against Aston Villa on Tuesday, coming on as a second-half substitute. His appearance places a player of Tibetan heritage among the elite competing in Europe’s premier club competition and represents a landmark moment for Tibetan football fans worldwide.
Born and raised in Switzerland, Tsawa is the son of Dorjee Tsawa, a former professional footballer for FC St. Gallen who is of Tibetan origin. Following in his father’s footsteps, Cheveyo began his football journey in the youth academies of FC St. Gallen 1879, FC Steinach and FC Zürich, steadily progressing through the ranks before earning a place in Zürich’s senior squad.
During the 2025–26 season, Tsawa made 36 first-team appearances for FC Zürich, scoring two goals and providing two assists. His consistent performances also earned him international recognition, and he represented Switzerland across multiple youth age groups, from the Under-16s to the Under-21s.
Known for his composure on the ball, tactical awareness and versatility in midfield, Tsawa can operate in both defensive and central midfield roles. His performances for FC Zürich and Switzerland’s youth national teams have been noted for their maturity, technical precision and ability to dictate the tempo of matches despite his young age.
Tsawa’s move to Club Brugge places him in one of Europe’s most competitive football environments. Widely regarded as one of Belgium’s most decorated clubs, Club Brugge is a perennial contender for the domestic title and a regular participant in the UEFA Champions League. The club has also built a strong reputation for developing emerging talent and giving young players a pathway to Europe’s highest level of football.
His arrival at Club Brugge therefore represents an important new chapter in his development, giving the young midfielder an opportunity to refine his game while competing against some of Europe’s leading clubs. For Tibetan communities, meanwhile, his rise through the ranks of European football has become a source of considerable pride, offering a rare and historic representation of Tibetans at the highest level of the sport.
