New Delhi, March 12: The regional Tibetan women’s association of Delhi carried out a protest rally from Jantar Mantar to Parliament street in the Indian capital today to mark 50 years since women of Tibet rose up against the Chinese occupation, two days after the popular uprising of March 10, 1959.
On today’s date 50 years ago, thousands of Tibetan women assembled at the foot of the Potala Palace to protest against continuing Chinese presence in their homeland.
Ms Sichoe Dolma, a teacher and member of RTWA, Delhi, read out the statement of Tibetan Women’s Association for the occasion.
Speaking to the crowd, Rinchen Norzom, president of RTWA said, “Today is a critical day and time for Tibetan women, we all must not forget the immense sacrifice made by our brethrens in Tibet.”
A two-minute silence was observed to pay respects to the Tibetan martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation.
Meanwhile, 150 members of the Tibetan Youth congress protested outside the UN information office where a memorandum was submitted by Tenzin Norsang of TYC, which is also carrying out ‘50 hours, 50 minutes, 50 sec hunger strike of above 50 years of age.
