DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 13: Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has written to the former US President Jimmy Carter expressing his concern and wishes for a swift recovery on Tuesday following the latter’s surgery yesterday in Atlanta to relieve pressure from bleeding in his brain.
The Tibetan leader wrote, “You have lived a truly meaningful life. I have admired your good work for many years. It is really wonderful that you have remained so active, dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance to those in need. You are an example to us all of how to be of benefit to others.”
Carter was admitted to the Emory University Hospital on Monday evening with a subdural Hematoma, a condition where blood is accumulated outside the brain, usually caused by trauma to the head. The 95-year-old was reported to have fallen three times in the last six months. brought on by a series of recent falls.
The oldest living US President suffered injuries after repeatedly falling; in May he broke a hip and then twice last month when he required 14 stitches and broke his pelvis. However, the outspoken public figure, seen as a statesman of the highest order made public appearance in high spirits following his injuries.
The Spokesman at the Carter Center, Deanna Congileo in a statement said, “There are no complications from the surgery. President Carter will remain in the hospital as long as advisable for observation. We do not anticipate any further statements until he is released from the hospital.”
The two leader have met a few times over the years including in 2002 and 2005 during the American Himalayan Foundation’s annual dinner at San Francisco. Carter has also publicly expressed admiration for the Dalai Lama’s advocacy of peace and compassion in dealing with China to solve the Tibetan issue.
