Three Tibetans from Nagchu arrested in Lhasa

Dharamsala, December 9: Three Tibetans, including a nun from Sog County in Nagchu prefecture are said to have been arrested by Chinese authorities in the Tibetan capital Lhasa last week, according to Ngawang Tharpa, a Tibetan from Nagchu now living in exile here.

Tenzin Dhargay, 21, Norbu Sangpo, 17, and a 48-year old nun Choedon were picked up by police on December 2 when they were on their way to offer food to their relatives prostrating at Jhokhang Temple, one of Tibet’s holiest shrines.

Information on their whereabouts and the reasons for their arrest are unknown to their relatives at the moment, sources told Ngawang.

When their whereabouts remained unknown for the next few days, their relatives went about looking for them in several places.

Officials from the Lhasa Public Security Bureau later told the relatives that they were held at a detention centre in Nagchu, but no further information were provided to them.

When the relatives of the detainees approached the relevant authorities, they were not allowed to meet them also.

According to the sources, Tenzin Dhargay was earlier sentenced to thee years of imprisonment for his role in raising pro-independence slogans. He was later released after the 48-year old nun Choedon paid huge amount of money to authorities.

Sources close to them doubt if the arrest was linked to it.
