Tibet to receive 2.6 million tourists in 2006

Chinese-occupied Tibet received 591,200 tourists in the first half of 2006 with a tourism income of 516 million yuan (about US$ 64.5 million). Champa Phuntsok, chairman of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) announced the figures in an economic videophone meeting held July 26.

TAR chairman has asked for infrastructure development to be promoted in the second half of 2006 saying the receiving capacity of some sight spots needed to be improved.

The report on tibetinfor.com, the Chinese government-funded website on Tibet said 78,000 tourists visited Tibet from July 1-6 causing a 46 per cent increase year-on-year.

Citing forecast from related departments including Lhasa Tourism Bureau, it said in the second half of 2006, TAR will receive 2 million tourists and a total of 2.6 million tourists will visit Tibet in 2006.
