Washington Tibetans to hold 11th Tibetfest in Seattle

The Tibetan Association of Washington will hold the 11th Tibetfest, a two-day festival of Tibetan culture, music, films and cuisine. The Tibetan cultural performance will include a mixture of traditional and modern and contemporary Tibetan music and songs by Tsering Dorjee Bawa, Tenzin Choedon, Sherab Wangmo, Techung of Chaksampa, Lochoe and Tsering Dorjee and other former graduates from Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, an India-based national cultural institute of Tibetan government in exile, the Tibetan Association of Washington State said in a July 26 release.

The festival to be held from August 26-27 at Seattle Centre in Seattle will feature Nawang Khechog, a Grammy nominee and one of the first Tibetan musicians to break into the international world music scene with his original and authentic musical compositions and also popular Tibetan artist Phurbu T. Namgyal. The local cultural group, Nyechen Thanglha and youth group from Vancouver, BC will also perform.

Other highlights of the festival are children’s event of making and painting of Tibetan traditional design and arts; photo exhibition of of rare photographs depicting various aspect of Tibetan life – from its breathtaking landscape to destruction and degradation of its eco-system to cultural annihilation over the past 50 years; screening of documentaries and movies about Tibet and Tibetans and a Tibetan-style bazaar filled with traditional Tibetan artifacts and religious instruments.

Slide shows and talks on Tibetan cultural tradition, status of women in Tibetan society, the role of monks and recognition of reincarnations.
