Australian cycling star Cadel Evans with specially designed undershirts emblazoned with "Free Tibet" under his jersey during the ongoing Tour de France cycling race in France on Sunday July 20, 2008. Evans has taken a strong public stand on the Tibet issue. "Trying to bring awareness of the Tibet movement is something someone in my position can do. I just feel really sorry for them. They don't harm anyone and they are getting their culture taken away from them. I don't want to see a repeat of what happened to Aboriginal culture [in Australia] happen to another culture."

A group of about 40 members, mostly western monks and nuns, of Western Dorjee Shugden Society shouted anti-Dalai Lama slogans outside Radio City Music Hall. The propitiators of 'the spirit Dorjee Shugden' alleges the Dalai Lama of denying religious freedom while the Dalai Lama says that worshiping the 'spirit' is detrimental to the dharma and Tibet, and was discouraged by the Great fifth Dalai Lama and the thirteenth Dalai Lama. On asked during the teaching, he said he himself was a worshiper of the spirit from 1951 until 70's but stopped after realizing he was wrong. He said that it is his responsibility as the Dalai Lama to advice the followers of the 'spirit' but it is entirely up to them whether to obey or ignore. A huge number of Tibetans and devotees exiting the Radio city after listening to the Dalai Lama chanted pro Dalai Lama slogans facing the group representing the Western Dorjee Shugden Society. The NYPD installed barricades on two sides to prevent physical confrontation. However, no untoward incidents were reported. Tibetans fear that China is manipulating the 'shugden spirit' issue in its favor by encouraging its propitiators. The number of shugden followers in Tibetan community has dwindled over the years.Photo:Tenzin Choephel, 07/17/08
