DHARAMSHALA, May 14: In another instance of death due to emotional shock, an elderly Tibetan man died after his son was arbitrarily arrested by Chinese security personnel in March this year.

Tsetan Tashi, in his 60s, died of shock after security officers arrested his 30-year-old son, Tsewang Norbu, a Namring Riwoche monastery monk, at Trekho village in Dopay Township in Ngamring County of Shigatse, central Tibet.

According to the Dharamshala based rights group Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, the Ngamring County Public Security Bureau officers arrested Tsewang Norbu for writing Tibetan independence slogans.

“On March 5, 2012, during a film screening attended by local Tibetans in the village community hall in Trekho village, Tsewang Norbu wrote ‘Tibet’ on one side and ‘China’ on the other side of a wall, then crossed out the word ‘China’. Below the crossed-out word, he wrote ‘Free Tibet,’” TCHRD said in a release.

Tsewang Norbu was confronted immediately by the official work teams stationed in the hall who then later informed the township authorities.

“At around 7 pm (local Time), the County PSB arrived in three vehicles and arrested Tsewang Norbu at his home. Minutes later, Tsetan Tashi, father of Tsewang Norbu, was dead,” the release said.

The whereabouts and well being of Tsewang Norbu remains unknown.

Also in March this year, a Tibetan women in Zatoe, Yulshul, died in a hospital after she fell unconscious at a Chinese security office, apparently suffering emotional shock, while demanding the whereabouts of her brother.

She had been approaching the PSB office a number of times enquiring and urging the officials to disclose information about her brother Khenpo Gyewala, a highly-respected scholar and abbot of Gyegyel Zogchen Monastery.
