Dharamsala, June 22 – A rare exhibition of science projects by Tibetan monks started here today at the Ghangchen Kyishong under the arrangement of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Emory Tibet Science Initiative and the Sager Science Leadership for Monks.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama dismantled clocks as a curious student of science but never went to a school to actually study science. But today he holds regular dialogues with neurologists, physicists, cosmologists, and doctors etc about wide ranging topics in an attempt to bring the experts of Buddhism and science together to share knowledge. The Tibetan Buddhist monks today have embraced the scientific theories thereby finding their correlation with Tibetan Buddhism.

The three-day exhibition is being held as a part of events by LTWA to commemorate 50 years of Tibetans and their government in exile. The interactive exhibition focuses on topics of common interest to both Buddhism and science and are presented by monks from the three monastic universities of Drepung, Ganden and Sera, Menri Bon monastery and Sakya Dongak Choeling monastery.

The projects by the monks cover topics such as human memory, sensory perceptions, formation of the universe, light and colour and elements and chromosomes etc.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama launched this project in order to integrate modern science subjects into the traditional study program of Tibetan monasteries, the website for the project says.

The monks had just wrapped up a month’s workshop at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics at Sarah near Dharamsala.
