Tibetan parliamentarians to embark on nationwide campaign
Phayul[Friday, December 07, 2012 04:24]
DHARAMSHALA, December 7: With the alarming escalation in Tibetan self-immolation protests, exile Tibetan lawmakers will be soon embarking on a month long intensive lobbying campaign across the length and breadth of India.

The Dharamshala based Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile announced a new lobbying campaign as part of the exile Tibetan administration’s attempts at garnering wider support for international intervention in the ongoing crisis inside Tibet.

From January 1 to 29, 2013, Tibetan parliamentarians in three groups will reach out across India, taking the Tibet campaign state by state.

In a release Wednesday, the Tibetan Parliament said that the parliamentarians in each state will meet with the honourable Governor, Chief Minister, Speaker of the Assembly, Members of Legislative Assembly and other high level officials.

“Apart from holding meetings with senior leaders, the Tibetan parliamentarians will also address press conferences and interact with the general masses to spread awareness on the critical situation inside Tibet and garner their support,” TPiE said.

Over a hundred local Tibetan volunteers will also be taking part in the nationwide campaign.

Earlier this year on July 7, the 77th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Parliament initiated the ‘Flame of Truth’ global torch relay to express “solidarity with the courageous and selfless acts” of Tibetans inside Tibet.

The torch campaign carries a signature campaign calling on the United Nations to discuss the issue of Tibet based on its earlier resolutions, to send an independent international fact-finding delegation to Tibet and to take special responsibility to ensure that the basic aspirations of the Tibetans inside Tibet are fulfilled.

The relay, after travelling around hundreds of cities all over the world, will conclude on December 10, World Human Rights Day, with the submission of the petitions, simultaneously to the UN Headquarters in New York City, UN Human Rights Council in Geneva and UN information office in New Delhi.

Since 2009, as many as 92 Tibetans have set themselves on fire protesting China’s continued occupation of Tibet and demanding freedom and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile. The month of November, during which China held its 18th Party Congress, was the deadliest, since the wave began, with 28 self-immolation protests.

The exile Tibetan administration has called for a Global Solidarity Day to be observed on December 10, Human Rights Day and urged Tibetans and supporters to “light a candle or lamp, observe a minute’s silence, and a say a prayer for all those who have died for the cause of Tibet, and locally organise vigils and rallies."
