DHARAMSHALA, May 9: “This evil China has invaded Tibet, It is not possible to live under this evil rule,” reads two lines from a last statement written in the form of a poem by Nangdrol, a young Tibetan who set himself on fire earlier this year.

Nangdrol’s last statement, along with a video footage of two other self-immolators, Sonam and Choephag Kyab, was released earlier today at a press conference held by the Dharamshala based Central Tibetan Administration.

“By risking their own lives, a group of Tibetans inside Tibet has sent the last statements and clips to us by mail,” Tenpa Dhargyal, an ex-political prisoner told reporters at the release.

Nangdrol, 18, set himself on fire near Zamthang Monastery in the Ngaba region of eastern Tibet on February 19 and passed away on the spot. According to sources in exile, Nangdrol raised slogans calling for the ‘long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’ and ‘freedom for Tibet’.

The monks at the Zamthang Monastery defied police orders and carried Nangdrol’s charred body inside the monastery. However, as pressure and intimidation mounted from the growing numbers of Chinese armed forces at the monastery, Nangdrol was cremated just hours after his death.

More that 1000 people had gathered at the monastery to keep watch over the body of Nangdrol and pay their last respects.

The fourth of eight children, Nangdrol, in his last poem urged Tibetans to maintain unity and harmony.

“By giving up my life to fire, Men and Women of Tibet, I hope you will keep unity and harmony,” Nangdrol wrote.

The young Tibetan also prayed for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet’s liberation.

“May Tibetan people get liberation from China’s evil rule, Under China’s evil rule there is immense suffering, This suffering is unbearable.”

“The evil China, having no love and compassion, Inflicts us with unbearable beatings and pain, Ultimately to smother us,” the poem further reads.

The continuing wave of self-immolations in Tibet has witnessed 35 Tibetans set their bodies on fire, since 2009, demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile and freedom in Tibet.
