Detained Tibetans Launches Hunger Strike in Tihar

Thirty- two Tibetans Jailed in Tihar for Demonstrating outside the Chinese embassy yesterday; the Detained Tibetans Launches Hunger Strike in Tihar.

A joint demostration taken out yesterday at 11 AM by three Dharamsala-based Tibetan NGOs; Tibetan Women’s Association(TWA), Tibetan Youth Congress(TYC) and Gu-Chu-Sum Movement of Tibet; outside the Chinese embassy in Delhi. The demonstration was a protest against the execution of a Tibetan monk, Lobsang Dhondup(aged 28) last Sunday on January 26 without fair and open trial. Lobsang Dhondup along with Trulku Tenzin Delek Rinpoche
were given death sentence on charges of bombing incidents and inciting separatism in Southwestern Sichuan province in Chinese occupied Tibet.

Chanakyapuri police arrested 32 Tibetans; 25 men and 7 women including who are presently held in Tihar jail and will be detained there until February 11, 2003. The arrested Tibetans launched a hunger from Chanakyapuri police station where they were first detained. Sending a strong signal of protest and condemnation against the execution of Lobsang Dhondup, the hunger strike has entered its second day today in Tihar. Those held in Tihar also includes the president of TWA and vice-president of TYC, a nun from Gu-Chu-Sum and two elderly women, aged 60 and 65. Some of those on hunger strike are in weak physical condition.
